Fraunhofer IFF VDTC Elbe-Dome – 360° LASER Projection

The hightech labs at the Virtual Development and Training Center VDTC at Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF, Magdeburg/D, operates a unique mixed reality lab for large-scale presentations of interactive visualizations, the so-called Elbe Dome. The facility houses a huge projection system: a 360° cylinder with a diameter of 16 m and a height of 6.5 m, equipped with six LASER projectors. The lower part of the projection screen merges into a dome segment. A visitor platform with a diameter of 10 m is located in the middle of the cylinder. The LASER projection system has a range of full 360°. Many options for interaction through IR tracking and other input devices exist.

Calibration of the Elbe Dome was done using our camera-based domeprojection.com auto-alignment tools. We started by measuring the complete installation to calculate the 3D distortion for a given eye point. A Windows desktop was required to be superimposed over the full range of the 6-channel real-time 3D representation. Therefore we calculated an independent 2D geometry correction from the acquired measurement results.

By using the domeprojection.com tools further calculation and implementation of geometry corrections for other eye points is now possible without new calibrations. Warping and blending as well as realization of the 2D superimposition is done with eyevis openWARP.
